Rhythm

Rhythm is the most crucial thing as a bass guitarist as you always need to play in sync with the band otherwise it doesn't look good for you.

Listed below I have explained rhythm and at the bottom I have created excersises that you can do with or without a bass guitar and this will help you at any stage wether that is a complete begginer or have been playing for a few months.

Whole Notes

Whole Note

A whole note lasts 4 beats — one full measure in 4/4 time.

Try: Count out loud or in your head 1 to 4 and each time you say 1 play a note on the bass guitar or tap on your lap

Half Notes/Minums

Half Note

Half notes are 2 beats long. In a bar of 4/4 you will play this note twice.

Try(easy): Count 1-4 in your head or out loud and each time you say 1 and 3 you play a note and you hold the note until you play the next one.

Try(Hard): Count 1-4 in your head or out loud and each time you say 2 and 4 you play a note and you hold the note until you play the next one.

Quarter Notes

Quarter Note

Quarter notes are worth 1 beat. You play once on every count (1, 2, 3, 4).

Try: Play on each number as you count 1–2–3–4.

Eighth Notes

Eighth Note

Eighth notes are half a beat. In 4/4, you count “1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &”.

Try: Play on every number **and** “&”.

Sixteenth Notes

Sixteenth Note

Each sixteenth note lasts 1/4 of a beat. You count “1 e & a 2 e & a...”

Try: Tap slowly and say “1 e & a” evenly before moving to the next beat.

Dotted Notes

Dotted Note

A dot adds **half the note's value**. A dotted quarter lasts 1.5 beats.

Tip: Great for syncopation and swing feel.

Rests

Rest Symbol

Rests mean silence. They follow the same beat values as notes:

- Whole rest = 4 beats silence
- Half rest = 2 beats silence
- Quarter rest = 1 beat
- Eighth rest = ½ beat
- Sixteenth rest = ¼ beat

Try: Mix rests into your practice. Play on 1, rest on 2, etc.
